Word of an unexpected loss in this world of ours, music, support, New York City...
Longtime friend and SIR employee Mell Terpos was found dead in his home. For the many years that the 52nd St. location was there, you could almost be sure to find him behind the counter on weeknights. Between his knowing EVERYONE, his guitar repair and his casual, warm nature, he was often a first stop in mid-town; before, Ray's, before Gray's, before the hotel sometimes. He sure did like the night time and the night life but was one of those constants that you suspected would be there even if all of the rest of it faded away
SIR 52nd is no more; he kinda floated around in SIR-land for a while as 52 was his spot. I met him in 1990 when I took a job driving for Roadshow and did a bobtail run to Florida with Hall and Oates. Mell was one of the guitar techs; our friendship began there. The many decades of reheasal with Paul Simon in the big room (the sound stage) cemented it.
I'll miss you Mell, your friendship, your laugh and your beautiful face. You were one of a kind.
Anyone who knew Mell, take a moment tonight to think of how lucky we were to know him.
UPDATE: In an early address book, I had a different last name for my friend; turned out it was his real name and the other was an easier Americanized one... his name was Mell Papaterpou.
